The Power of Hope

The Power of Hope Last night I went to bed reading 7 Steps to a Pain-free Life. Heres what struck me: This book has a lot of steps you can follow to have less pain (or, be pain-free). Its very feature-rich.  But the reason Im reading it, and the reason people bought it, is not for the features.  I started reading this book because of the BENEFIT. Sure, I want to understand the dynamics of my neck and back, and how they all work. Sure, I want to learn some exercises that will be beneficial, but neither of those are the reasons Im reading this book. Im reading this book because I want to be pain-free.  There is hope, according to the title, and the introduction, that the pain I experience can actually go away, forever. My first exposure to the McKenzie Method was around 15 years ago, when a doctor referred me to a physical therapist who was a McKenzie Method guy. To be honest, this was the most intriguing and honest medical consultation Ive ever had.  Without going into our first meeting, and the next few weeks, Ill just say that the results were amazing. What I learned about my back, and one specific problem (pain), was enough to help me go through the rest of my life to avoid or fix that pain. Recently, Ive been experiencing a different pain in a different place, and its time to dive deeper into some other exercises, and knowledge about the root issues of my pain.  This is all about HOPE. Sometimes, I am hopeless that Ill live a pain-free life.  But this book promises me hope. Switching gears to YOU, I wonder what you promise your future company.  Is it that you can do A faster, B better, and C cleaner than anyone else?  Is it that you are smart and have high integrity? Those are all great, and important, things.  But in reality, you bring HOPE to the employer. Hope that they will make more money, or save more money, or that Headache A or Wildest Dream B will actually come true. When I hired my last developer, I did it because I want to make serious and major progress in JibberJobber. Not because I want more lines of code written, but because I want to offer more value to my users, and help people get onboarded with JibberJobber better (thats been one of my headaches for years). She will help with that. I dont know how many lines of code shell add (or remove), but I do know shell help us get closer to achieving our goals of delighting people who sign up and get started with JibberJobber. She has given me an added measure of HOPE.  And that is one of the most powerful things she can give me. What HOPE are you communicating in your value proposition? Why LinkedIn is More Important than Facebook or Twitter In a study from ROI Research, 59 per cent of respondents say LinkedIn is their most important account on social networks. This is a big gain from last years survey when only 41 per cent said LinkedIn is their number one. The fact that LinkedIn is the most important network to people is interesting as the average user only logs on 2.9 times per month. Compare this to Facebook where the average user logs in every day. Another interesting fact is that LinkedIn never actually call themselves a social network, they prefer the term professional network. We also learn from the study that respondents with active LinkedIn accounts (i.e. not signed up and forgot about it completely), half of them visit the professional networking site once a week and a fifth log on daily.    This is actually less than the figures from the height of the recession a year ago when two thirds visited the site at least weekly. When people notice this, they realize how vital their own profile has become and thus LinkedIn gains in importance overall. Under the radar in your office. Think about it, most offices have a ban on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and the such just to keep productivity levels up. Is there ever a ban on LinkedIn? Nopes. Again think about it, on LinkedIn there is really nothing to hide. You only get one tiny picture of yourself and a limited space to tell the world about your interests. Above all, there is no wall on your profile.  This means nobody can tag you in drunken photos or write nasties on your wall. This could be part of the appeal of LinkedIn for anyone who is not Generation Y. Word of mouth. Whilst social media is all about connecting online, we only tend to use sites that someone has recommended. Most people have by now heard success stories from friends finding a job or a new client through LinkedIn. Did you ever hear that about Facebook or Twitter? I rest my case. Its real. Apart from a few dummy profiles set up by headhunters to find new vacancies, everyone on LinkedIn are themselves. We have our real names, our real pictures and were listed under our real employer. The terms and conditions of LinkedIn state that you have to be truthful on your profile and you may only have one. Compare this to Twitter or MySpace where youre just as likely to be known as CyberKitten and sport a neon colored avatar as you would be using your own name and image. People are talking about the customer is always right - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog My post listing the Top 5 reasons The Customer Is Always Right is wrong has spawned a lot of great comments in the post itself and one some other websites including these: Kinkoids Unite (a site for Kinkos employees) In my region, when an employee is mentioned in a customer complaint, he/she has to apologize to all 11 center managers in a conference call whether they were wrong or wronged. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..? Digg One of the consistent back up statements of The Customer is Always Right is the amount of dollars it costs to replace a customer. It costs more to replace a customer than to retain one most times. However, it also costs a lot more to recruit, hire, and train a new employee than it does to keep one happy. Excellent point I never even though of that one. AdultDVDTalk (huh?) Unfortunately though, most companies in the customer service arena no longer even teach the basics of customer service. They just assume that it is a common-sense thing. Having spent 20 years interviewing job applicants, I can also say that there is no such thing as common sense! Just take a look at the high school and college grads showing up for job interviews in jeans and tee-shirts or chewing gumor my favorite was the young lady who excused herself to answer her cell phone and carry on a brief but totally unnecessary conversation! Thats true too. Remember: Just because the customer is not always right doesnt mean the employees are always right either. It can be (gasp) more complicated than that. Reddit On a very, very small number of occasions in my various service roles over the years, Ive asked customers to leave the establishment because they were incorribly belligerent, hostile and abusive, and flat-out refused to accept any attempt to satisfy them. In these cases, the people were shopping for a fight rather than a commodity. Shopping for a fight rather than a commodity what an excellent expression! Management Line has an Australian perspective: I have consistently stood up for my staff and either shut up or evicted such people from the area. The interesting thing is that far from losing customers, quite often in fact more often than not other customers will come forward and either lend support or on several occasions, come forward and let someone know that if we had backed down they themselves would have walked away. Yay! Your other customers may be watching and when they see unreasonable people getting better treatment that may offend their sense of fairness.
